Sunday 21st, labour weekend, was a beautiful day and 11 of us set off at 8am for Barewood Gardens in the lower Awatere Valley. The Ferraby family are preparing the 3 acre garden surrounding their elegant home ready for Garden Marlborough and various tours that visit over the summer. Cameras and tripods ready and we all set off in various directions to make the most of our morning visit. The rhododendrons were huge and glorious, wisteria hung from several verandahs and precious and special plants were pointed out to us.
After meeting on the verandah for morning tea, refreshed and eager to capture more before the sun got too bright we set off again for another hour. There was a vegetable and herb garden surrounded by small hedges, a small lake and boat, ornaments, gates and old machinery. We felt so lucky that there was no wind at all to contend with, perhaps the shade and sun were the most challenging elements of the day. However all 11 of us thoroughly enjoyed the visit, were made most welcome and I’m sure some of us will return.
