Set Subject

We were exremely lucky that Owen was able provide the critique after the closing day of the topic. So thank you very much.

A Grade         Open

Evening Light

A peaceful scene it's pleasing to see that the break water is not placed in the center but up almost into thirds. A crop on the left where the light starts to create the V would enhance the picture. There is a small dot on the right-hand side, in the light reflection which needs to be remove as it is distracting.               Merit

Fungi after Rain

This image would be better suited to a portrait mode. It would allow the viewer to see the intricacies and beauty of the fungi. With some careful editing this image could be a winner in a nature competition.  Accepted

Oceans Edge

The land and the sky dominate the image. The oceans edge is only a third of the picture. By cropping the image on the left up to the end of the dark land, the image could be enhanced                               Accepted

A Grade   Set Subject

Candlelight

The candle holder needs to be level it doesn't matter if the candle is not vertical. To enhance this image expose it 1-2 stops and then move the shadows controller to the left. This would allow the holder to sparkle. A little bit of selective sharpening could help. Watch the histogram.                         Accepted

Dragon Bridge

A good record shot of the bridge at night. The light haze could be partially removed by using the dehaze slider. The same shot using a tripod, a narrower aperture and longer exposure would have make the  lights sparkle                 Accepted

Fyfe Hut

A great image. It creates an emotional response. The white light of the tilly lamp inside the hut illuminates the surrounding snow outside and adds to the feel of the whole image.  One wonders what is happening in inside the hut Honours and Best Image of the Month

Grant Williams Kinetic Art

You have taken someone else's artwork and added a creative touch to it which is allowed. By increasing the shadows, to remove the distracting background, it would allow the image to stand out more.                   Accepted

Kinetic Sculpture

This is a record of someone else’s artwork.            Not accepted

Milky Way at Monkey Bay

The Milky Way is the subject of the image and it should be dominant. The bottom half is a distraction.  A simple silhouette in the foreground would be better.     Not accepted

Night Glass

This image is under exposed. See your histogram. Try exposing it two stops and then move the shadows slider to the left. A little bit of selective sharpening would add some sparkle.          Not accepted.

Night Illuminations

A good clean sharp image. It would also look great in black and white.         Honours

Night Lights

Have a look at your histogram. This image is under exposed. Try increasing the exposure about 1 1/2 stops. The overlay has added to the ambience of the image.         Not accepted

Akarito

A good image in black and white. The shed illumination needs to be reduced as it distracts from the subject. They little streaks of white in the foreground are distracting and could be removed      Accepted

Picton Marina

Look at your histogram. There are no black. Increase the black until the histogram is touching the left- hand side, then open the shadow as required.       Not accepted

Roswell Nelson

A beautiful evening sky with the silhouette of the sculpture and the hills makes it an interesting photo.  There is colour noise in the sky. This is a common problem with night-time photography. This can be reduced or eliminated by using the luminance slider. Reducing the colour noise would give the image even cleaner look.            Merit

Spin by Night

Check your histogram. It should not go outside the right-hand side. After reducing the exposure you can open up the shadows with the shadows slider or try using the contrast slider in this image. Not accepted

Still Waters

There is a haze in the image. By increasing the black, it makes the rest of the image stand out. The light could have been given sparkle by reducing the aperture opening and increasing the length of time for the exposure. That would have enhanced the image.     Accepted

Stone Sentinels

This image has the ping-pong effect. The eyes keep switching from one stone to the other. It would have been better to concentrate on one stone. A small amount of contrast would have helped to pop this image.    Accepted

Super Moon Witching Hour

An interesting title. The clever positioning of the cat has created an interesting image.  Merit

The Molesworth

A beautiful image. Try reducing a little exposure or black to add to the mood of the image.                Honours

Uttakliev   Aurora boralis

To be there to see it and capture it so well is amazing. Minor luminance noise on the shoreline.  Honours

Vines by Night

Only half the image is in focus and it doesn’t seem to be intended. The netting at the righthand side dominates the image.   Not accepted

B Grade - Open

Bellbird

Great shot of the bellbird. Good catch light in the eye. The highlights need to be lowered as they are distracting. By cropping the image the effect of the hot spots can be reduced. Cropping will enable the viewer to see a larger image of the bird. Try opening up the shadows to show more of bird’s breast and feathers.    Merit

B Grade         Set Subject

Blood Moon

A great shot of the moon. It is great to see the detail in the image. Look at your histogram and you will see that it does not start at black.  Use your blacks slider and suddenly your whole image pops out. merit

Blood moon eclipse

Cropping would help the viewer see the details in the image.                        Acceptance

Day has Ended

One of the first things to do when editing an image is to check the edges. Both left and right edges needs to be cropped to remove some foliage. By cropping some off the sky the silhouette will stands out and enhance the image.   Accepted

Drinks with friends

Nobody is interested in the drinks and three people are more interested in something outside the photo        Not accepted

Listening to live music

Look at your histogram. By adding one stop of light there is a great photo with atmosphere. Add some selective sharpening to make it shine.      Acceptable

Matua

Good positioning of the moon. Good aperture setting to help the light sparkle.        Accepted

 No cat no fiddle

The signpost distracts from the image. A better title could have been selected. Maybe “No moon” would have been a better title.        Not accepted

Sparkles at Night.

A great image. The still water and the reflection make an intriguing image. With a some contrast the light lines will pop.         Honours

Sunset over Wellington

Look at your histogram. Exposure needs to be increased a lot then lower the highlights. Open up the shadows a little and finally remove the colour noise. There is a good image hidden here. Not accepted.

The quiet after the storm

Good leading lines Clean and sharp. Try reducing the highlights until the righthand side of the histogram is just touching.  Merit

Travel light travel fast

An intriguing image of road traffic. The boundary of the road is clearly seen. A crop of the righthand side would enhance the image by reducing the amount of black space.       Merit

C Grade         Open

Dusty Glow

The elephant family are well backlit by the sun. To further enhance this image try a little more exposure, open up the shadows and add some black. This will allow the viewer to see more detail on the animals.  Honours

More than just a tongue tip test

Great eye contact. Try some edge sharpening. A reduction of the luminance of the background colours – yellow and orange would help to increase the focus on the subject.         Honours

Working on the railway

This used to happen in NZ. Try opening the shadows. The sky can be darkened by reducing the luminance of blue.      Acceptance.

C Grade Set Subject

Cloudy Bay

Composition is good. By opening the shadows the folds of the landscape would be revealed and would balance the photo. A little contrast would enhance the sky.         Merit

House on the pier

Well, lit photo. The foreground lilies could be improved with edge sharpening. Some cropping off the top would help to balance the photo.              Accepted

Moon Craters

Grate detail showing the moons craters. Next time try to have space between the subject and the frame edge.                       Merit

Palacio Real Madrid

Good detail in the palace. Cropping of from the left and right-hand sides to the edge of the building   would enable the viewer to see the detail better.                Acceptance

Reflect

Look at your histogram. It is hard against the left-hand side. This shows that it is under exposed. There is a lot more to this photo.            Not accepted

The Night Garden

It is good to see the tree from a low angle and a definite foreground. By opening up the shadows the dark top of the tree will be seen.                Merit

Waikato Fireworks

Good capture of the fireworks. To enhance the image try adjusting the contrast and reducing the highlights.     Accepted

Waka Prow

A good angle for this photo. To enhance this image try increasing the exposure, closing the shadows and doing some edge sharpening.     Accepted
